Dani : Yeah , the first one was function with Dan . Because I always expect a really interesting quislingism with him , and I think this one is just that . It ’s really interesting , and I sense like we fetch something from our man to this world . I just sense like we ’re bringing something of our own experience , either tale - wise or art - wise . It ’s just a eldritch quislingism .
Dan Watters : The two of us have worked together and made stuff that ’s been - I do n’t want to use the word Avant Garde , but - strange . We ’ve just done whatever we wanted . For me , personally , I did n’t see as much of a Batman challenge - like we ’re ask these character reference and have to prove something , or keep up with something big . Dan Watters : I think the bottom line is that the stuff I like about Batman and superheroes , particularly in the DC universe , is that they ’ve been around for so long and are so tensile . Because there ’s been so many iteration that are tweaks or foibles , they fit in just as well as anything else .
The whole idea that we ’re taking Ten - Eyed Man - who is this very strange , very Silver Age fictional character - and just place our twisting and melodic theme into that feels quite unlined . Because the foreignness is all intrinsic ; it ’s all right there in Gotham .
Dan Watters : She ’s someone who amount to Gotham and came to Arkham to really try and help people . She ’s a psychologist ; she ’s not a prison house warden . She really wanted to help her patients , and she understood that it ’s not a casing of " fixing people , " quote - unquote . She wanted to help them reassimilate into society , and was build slow progress with different patients . And then all of her work was destroyed , and her life blew up when Joker did what he did to Arkham Asylum on A - day .
She ’s been exit in the wake of that , where almost all of her patients died . She feel this overwhelming common sense of failure . Dan Watters : I fully jazz what Dani ’s capable of , so I ’m in spades writing because I know that if she depict something like that , it ’s gon na have that impression . Those are the weapons I know we have - or putz rather weapons ; that ’s a less fast-growing word .
We know how each other work , and we know what each other are interested in . The overlap of that is what ends up on the page .
SR : You have Professor Pyg in this story , one of the most famous , all - time flagrant Batman villains . But he might be one of the least disconcerting in this issue . Are you even aware of how creepy-crawly this is as you are sop up it ?
Dani : No . Well , I trust it ’s quite creepy-crawly . I ’m well-chosen you have these feelings while reading As Dan said , I cogitate our combining on this book comes out this way . For me , it happens really organically with no effort . We ’ve reached the level that I will register something in his playscript , and - I hope - I guess right what he has in his brain . And it comes out really of course .

Dani : For me , get them - now that you ’re saying this with really good language - I ’m drawing them in their natural means . They ’re not trying to do something . They ’re just there .
Dan Watters : They ’re in their natural state . At least , when we meet them , they ’re close to their lifelike state and to what makes them comfortable .
The book ’s about Arkham , but it ’s also about Gotham . And the way I think about Gotham is that it ’s this really despairing place . And unless you ’re - I was gon na say Bruce Wayne , but he ’s not even that plenteous anymore . But without being part of the proper Gotham elite group , I think most people in Gotham City are clinging on by their fingernails to what have them feel safe and what makes them feel well-situated .
This is the city where the Joker inhabit , and all of these colorful characters who will pull your cheek off as soon as say hello . Everyone in the metropolis is clinging on by their fingernails to what make them find normal or safe or sane , and I do n’t recollect these characters are any different . They ’re grapheme who want more help , and the city is failing them .
SR : There ’s a single line in the first issue that gets at what you ’re talking about . Someone notes that if everyone witness out these Arkham inmates are run murderously in the city , then no one will be good – including from the citizen .
Dan Watters : Yeah , I think that ’s fair to say . In the real populace , we encounter hoi polloi all the time who seem strange or unusual and do n’t react to thing in the same room we do . But in Gotham City , that has a dissimilar context , and there ’s a different level of paranoia there .
SR : There are also some very open suggestion that fan of the Arkham Asylum history and lore and mythology are also go to be serve here . Is there a supernatural element to the narration in addition to the psychiatric ?
Dan Watters : I believe that ’s also one of the things that ’s very interesting . Dan Watters : It ’s funny , because when we pitched this book , I had just written the Azrael story for Urban Legend . I cogitate it come out the same month .

We knew we wanted some something that would dog our protagonists through the story . SR : Did you seek to put your own spin on him or your own rendition of him ? He ’s such a notable silhouette and character .
Dani : I do n’t have this purpose , but it take place . Because of the style I have , somehow I take out a lot of details . Sorry , but it works .
But I did n’t feel like I had to transfer him . especially with Azrael , I felt like there was n’t anything I would wish to transfer . I just die with it , and it ’s just in my style . But I ’m really grateful for Dan ’s splash pages . There ’s some really good pages with Azrael .
Dan Watters : There are some pages , peculiarly come up in issue 2 . When I construe both the furrow art and Dave ’s colouration , I thought , " Oh , my goodness ! "
Dani : Oh , yeah . I ’m so happy to be working with Dave on this .
SR : My last question is a selfish one , because I spend the first issue tortured over what you two were force me to behold , though I enjoyed every minute of it . Will this write up get well-to-do for me , or am I just going to have to accept this experience ?
