It only make sense thatBatmanand his nativeGothamare so linked , however , the unexampled DC young adult graphical novelWhistleshows that the Dark Knight might need his city , but his city does n’t call for him to be interesting . Much like many of DC ’s other YA graphic novels , Whistleoffers a more grounded take on familiar   territorial dominion that is sure to concern young adult reviewer who do n’t see themselves in DC ’s more mainstream offering .

Coming from the creative duo of E. Lockhart and Manuel Preitano , Whistleoffers a much different look at Gothamthan readers will be familiar with . Caught between the rampant putrefaction rotting Gotham from the inside out and her mother ’s health issues , Willow has never had a tough time . Things amount to a breaking gunpoint when her mother disclose that they no longer have the money to continue treating her brain tumor . One of the thing that will cohere out most to longtime comic fan is n’t whatWhistleadds to Gotham , but what it subtracts . Batman , the Joker , Commissioner Gordon , all of these classic characters are almost totally omitted from the Gotham presented byWhistle . This does n’t mean the city is whole devoid of its stranger elements though , as characters as wide-ranging as Poison Ivy , the Riddler , and Killer Croc all make substantial coming into court . The result is a Gotham that is far more realistic , even when mass with power do show up . Far from the grandiose and striking battles of Batman and Joker , Whistlepresents a Gotham where criminal offense and justice all stem from a far more practical billet .

This more grounded approach bleeds through into every page . Preitano ’s art gives this edition of Gotham an alone different graphic symbol than what proofreader are used to .   alternatively of the dark blues , grey , and blacks that characterise Batman ’s version of the city , Whistle’sGotham is bathed in the muzzy blue and oranges of evenfall . In add-on to the refreshing colouring palette , Preitano clearly has an oculus for architecture . All of it adds up to make the world ofWhistlefeel live in . This is a city that is tired and wounded , but strong and proud all the same .

If the book has any fault , it ’s in where it does adhere to a far more familiar formula . It accept a piddling too long before Willow in reality starts her superhero career , leading to an beginning story that is more origin than account . Still , even that does nothing to overshadow the heart and care present . Lockhart ’s writing make Willowa compelling character regardless of her superhero double life . She is immediate to recognise the many problem her metropolis faces , and actively fight to change things , yet still unabashedly loves where she lives .

Unmoored from the marvellous weight of Batman , Whistleis able to portray a Gotham which will be familiar to anyone hold out in a city unfairly written off as " offense - ridden . "   The Gotham ofWhistleis sure a blank space with problems , but it is also a place teem with life story and history .
