Screen Rant : You ’ve exit through press interviews forHardware , you ’re hot offAquaman : The Becoming , and moreBatmanstories on the means . Safe to say you ’re riding gamey ?
Brandon Thomas : I do n’t have time to be very … every once in a while I ’ll kind of stop and I ’ll get to really like , " Oh , wow . This is actually happening . " It happened a couple of weeks back when I get the the actual hardcover for Batman : Black and White . I have a history in the latest loudness with a longtime protagonist and artist Khary Randolph , who illustrates Excellence , which is the Divine possess book we do for Image . So when I capture the hardback of the Batman : Black and White , that was one of those moments where I was really kind of knocked back . And I had to recognize , this is really incredible .
I ’m a huge , vast fan of Black and White , and also Legends of the Dark Knight , which we ’ll talk about shortly . But you love , I have mayhap two dozen Batman : Black and White statue , all over my government agency and house . So it ’s really surreal to get to contribute to these variety of seminal series , that have been so important to me in my human relationship with comics . And Legend of the Dark Knight was something that was even older for me , you know ? I came into comics in 1992 , basically the same calendar month that Image launched , and Legends of the Dark Knight was one of those volume back then . I do n’t know if it had take off move or was about to start , but it was one of those books that was really significant to me in my first couple of age , getting into cartoon strip and enter out how everything process .
I specifically think that legend of the Dark Knight was the first anthology type serial publication I had ever see , where the creative teams would shift , and the artistic production would interchange . So it ’s really awesome to fast forrader to today , and I get to really kick in a nerveless story to that .
SR : So how did Legends of the Dark Knight , a mirthful series with a seriously respected story at DC Comics , move into the picture for you ?
BT : Oh , yeah . get along on . No , no , it was it was pretty , it was moderately simple . It was a moderately easy ask . " Hey , we ’re set up together a young Legends of the Dark Knight . You want to be in it ? " " Yes . Yes , I definitely desire to . "
So I pitched them a crowd of stories , and the one we make up one’s mind to do was this cool team - up between Batman and J’onn J’onzz , which sport the Calendar Man as the big baddie . Which is a scoundrel I ’ve always make love , he ’s always one of those villains that I feel is waiting for … kind of like a breakout moment . I sense like there ’s so much cool stuff that that could be done with that character . So this was like a tiny little reflexion of that belief .
SR : What do you think it is about Calendar Man that that stuck out like that for you ?
BT : Oh , man . I love the conception , I have sex like the tattoo of the month compose around his headland . It ’s just a really cool gimmick , it ’s a really cool Batman gimmick to me . The fact that he ’s put law-breaking based on this calendar . So my initial idea was , get ’s have him pull crimes agree to some other calendar . It does n’t have to be our calendar to shape . So that ’s how I come up with this initial idea of him dedicate offense according to this ancient Martian calendar . That ’s how Martian Manhunter gets inscribe to consult with Batman on on this case .
It was middling awing . I care the estimate , and I just liked the character . I fuck the visuals that we were capable to do , some some really cool optic thing with them in the report too , that I do n’t want to spoil too much . But we we take advantage of that visual in some interesting ways .
SR : So was that an theme for the story that then brought in Martian Manhunter ? Or was it vice versa , trying to think ' How do I add J’onn in here with Bruce ?
BT : Oh , it part with Calendar Man . I was essay to use baddie that not everyone is going to use . So I was trying to kind of put a list together of my preferred hidden Batman villains . And he was just at the top of it . Another villain that I love so much is frantic Hatter , and I expend crazy Hatter in my Batman : Black and White story , so I ’m kind of move through this individual list of all of my favorite Wyrd , off kilter , maybe not so democratic Batman villains . But it started with Calendar Man . When I came up with this idea of him using other calendars , perhaps calendars of other planets or other timeline , then that variety of meshed together . " What about a Martian calendar ? "
I did a story , mayhap a year or so ago with a cool team - up with Aquaman and Frankenstein that had a little Mars natural process . Frankenstein is another one of those characters that understandably I ’m obsessed with . I do n’t require to give it away too much , but there are a set of very knowing Frankenstein references in more than one or two DC stories that I ’ve done . So it ’s just kind of like that fascination with Calendar Man , and Mars . And it really manifested in , " This would be fantabulous to bring in J’onn . " You know , they ’re both detectives , but J’onn has a whole dissimilar science band , evidently . It would be coolheaded to see them together on a typesetter’s case like this .
SR : What is that moral force of hearing those characters let the cat out of the bag to one another ? Like you said , Legends is unquestionably an anthology where you are less bound to larger restraint .
BT : Yeah , it ’s more classic continuity . When I think of the … it ’s not really name , it ’s like a classic continuity , but I just always think of the of the cartoons . Very , very classic , but very thick and nuanced depiction of the character that anyone can break up up . We have to have baseline underlying knowledge of the characters in society for it to really kind of make gumption .
But it ’s really coolheaded to put the two of them in a room together , and have them collaborate on this case . Especially when there are some look of the case that Batman mayhap is n’t inevitably too comfortable with . A little telepathy , a small shape shifting . So it would be nice to have another twosome of deal on this case that could also morph and transform . And do a couple of things that he physically might not be able-bodied to do .
SR : Martian Manhunter fan have been saying for yr now that J’onn can do everything Superman does , and more . When you have a character like Batman , do you think , " Well I ca n’t entirely humiliate both of the Justice League ’s heavy hitter here . " But how can anyone compete with J’onn in terms of detective work ?
BT : Yeah , I mean , it ’s just one of those things where if you may convey that deficiency of insecurity in the characters , then it really helps with the readership . Have a Batman that can accept , in story , that there are physically some affair that he ca n’t do , and that ’s okay . Then that is not portrayed as ' Batman ’s not as strong as J’onn . ' Because of course , but that ’s not the point . He does n’t need to be as strong as him in this context . Then it ’s also trying to depict a mutual kind of regard between the two character , which I feel kind of riddle those questions of who is better at this . They recognise that ' I ’m good at certain things than he is . And that ’s fine , because we ’re trying to lick the case . Stopping the bad guy rope is more important than envision out who did what , or what started where . '
I think it ’s a little easy for the interview to also accept , because Batman does n’t care . So why do you like ? Batman is very safe , you know , within himself . I do n’t think he has … it would be coolheaded to fell . You have it off , ' I have a woodworking plane to do the thing that J’onn was just doing on his own , but that ’s o.k. . ' I think he ’s gotten used to it over the years .
SR : Are there part of that moral force you enjoy the most then , the present moment that you are happy in fetch J’onn and Batman together ?
BT : The lighter moment . Yeah , there are a couple of not really jokes , but there ’s a couple of lighter moments in the story that were really coolheaded to impersonate that familiarity decently . I like it to feel like these people know each other , like they have genuine relationship that is more than just keep the populace or stopping the big guy . Those consequence where you may inject a footling lightness , or a little levity into their kinship makes it feel like a fiddling more intimate and a fiddling more lived in .
I feel like these are just two cat that have very tragical backstories that are kind of standardised . You have it away , they both fall behind their family in very horrible , tragical direction . And I recall that just informs … not the connection , but the relationship between the two . I think that where the mutual regard comes from . I think a character like Batman , like Bruce Wayne , would respect someone like J’onn J’onzz , who went through something so horrible and so traumatic and not only pull round it , but turned into a better interlingual rendition of himself .
Bruce Wayne would obviously never have been Batman without what bump to his parent . So I mean there ’s a side of Batman that ’s , ' I respect this guy . I translate what drive him . And I understand the fact that he had this tragic thing that happened to him , but he still went the right path . ' He did n’t get that turn him even in directions that Bruce has plough . I do n’t know , I call up J’onn might be more emotionally well adjusted than Bruce Wayne is , and I think that would be something he would appreciate .
SR : I know that the terminus ' growing interpreter in DC Comics ' is heap so much imperativeness on you , but I do have in mind it as a compliment .
BT : [ Laughs ] Thank you , I ’m just trying to take advantage of every chance that I ’m getting at DC . And I think that there is a very , very specific kind of matter that I ’m after in my work … a ringing , right ? This story featuring Batman and J’onn is about offense , and people have been killed . But I require there to be a kind of lightsomeness to the oeuvre that really shines through . We ’ve all interpret comics where it really looks like a pull have powers , and I just do n’t sign to that . I remember that it should feel cool to fly , and stop people that are hurting multitude . To me , there should be a kind of … not gloating , but there should be a sort of appreciation for being in a position to do that .
I sense like when we were kids , we all desire to be a superhero so we could save citizenry and do cool things . I just want to check that that ’s reflected as much as it can be in my work .
SR : I do n’t think back anyone ever telling me Batman could n’t have exuberance about what he ’s doing .
Yeah ! I mean , obviously we all cognize Batman , we all do it his history . But I feel like there has to be present moment where even he stops and looks around . ' Look at this affair I ’ve created . These people ’s life that I ’ve alter mostly for the better . ' Certain Robins not so much dear , certain ones much better . But I would recollect there are moments where he would have to be impressed with himself , even just for egotism ’s sake . ' search at what I have done . ' Especially in contrast to all of his friend who have force .
When I was going to college , I had this group of protagonist , and I was the only one that did n’t play glob . All of my protagonist were like , collegiate athletes . And I was n’t . I feel like it would be like that to him . He has all of these famous friends , potent friend , that have done all these amazing things . But he ’s still done amazing things in his own right , as a normal – he ’s not a normal man , but you know what I mean .
I feel like there are minute when he ’s like , ' I did all powerful , you know ? I ’m contributing . I ’m still getting it done . I ’m still figuring out how to get it done . ' That ’s one of those thing I feel , sometimes , we get a little too immersed in our own shadow and wretchedness . I feel like these characters , especially the black and browned ones , have to stand a little taller in certain respect .
