Star Wars : The Last Jediis doubtless the most divisiveStar Warsmovie ever made , and I ’ve found myself on both sides of the disputation as an torrid defender and a harsh critic . While DisneyStar Warshad plenty of critic beforeThe Last Jedicame out , I commend those first few geezerhood as an beatify time to be a fan . We had several newStar Warsmovieson the horizon , and Disney ’s first two exit were generally well - received .

Then came December 2017 , and I never could have portend just how divided theStar Warsfandom was about to get . It ’s gentle to see why fan reaction toThe Last Jediwas so sundry , specially when author / director Rian Johnson has submit his preference for making movies that regard audiences this path . So how did I go from lovingThe Last Jedito criticize it as much as those I used to debate ?

How I Felt About The Last Jedi Opening Night

I wasn’t quite sure how I felt

My initial reaction toThe Last Jediwas how many older fans described seeingStar Wars : Episode I - The Phantom Menacein 1999 … I did n’t know what to think . I definitely loved certain elements , from the shocking braid to the gorgeous visuals , but the direction Luke Skywalker ’s story get going in was about the last thing I would have gauge . I avoided the lagger and as many spoiler as possible , so these things really surprised me .

It did n’t help that the theater experience was less than idealistic for aStar Warsopening night . There was a cark blood-red pixel near the bottom left of the filmdom , I had to use the can for the total second half , and we were a small too far back in the theater . Because I could n’t be fully plunge and was take aim off guard by the fib , I was determined to giveThe Last Jedianother chance the next day .

Why I Used To Love The Last Jedi

The hype of a new and different Star Wars movie

By the time the credits roll on the second screening , I was whole in sexual love withThe Last Jedi . This is why I always stress that I understand other sports fan ' admiration of the film , even if I no longer partake in that opinion . At the fourth dimension , however , I was in the camp that thoughtThe Last Jediwas brilliant and exactly whatStar Warsneeded to shake thing up .

I loved howThe Last Jedisubverted many tropes we ’d come to expect inStar Wars , all the scene with Luke and Rey , and how it on the face of it gave the third film the exemption to do anything . I imagine the overwhelmingly electronegative response from some on-line fan pushed me further by , as many of their criticism seemed unfair or greatly exaggerated . I ’m embarrassed to intromit I betroth in more than one het up debate withLast Jedihaters on Reddit .

How My Last Jedi Opinions Began To Change

From defending to critiquing

A few years later , I still likedThe Last Jedi , but maybe not to the same extent I once had . I also gravitate off from heated on-line debates about anything , so not invariably fight down it mean I was n’t rekindle my love for it . This allow me to acknowledge the movie ’s problems on my own , and while this did n’t make me hate it , I accepted that my feelings were now more mixed and complicated .

A social metier interaction on May the 4th reignite the debate of whether Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill hat Star Wars : The Last Jedi .

I was more unforced to read limited review , watch videos , and have polite conversation with people who did n’t likeThe Last Jedi . It became clear thatnot all the motion picture ’s critics were to a fault mean or resistant toStar Warsdoing something different , and I realized I had n’t wanted to bear the problems I always had with the movie . More recently , I had a complete Skywalker Saga endurance contest , and seeingThe Last Jediafter all the other motion-picture show sealed the passel .

The Last Jedi Is Now One Of My Least Favorite Star Wars Films

And possibly my least favorite to watch

I do n’t hateThe Last Jedi , but I am now at a period where I find it incredibly thwarting . By make Luke a crabby solitudinarian who has hand up , it feels like the intact plot ofThe Force Awakenswas a waste matter of time because the First Order had no reason to fear Luke helping the Resistance . I ’ve also come to appreciate Luke Skywalker ’s original personation and submarine sandwich ’s journey , so I detest him undergoing such a ultra alteration offscreen .

The movie bring in similarly frustrative decisions with other characters , andalmost every scene has plot of ground hole and elements that do n’t make mother wit . Why does the Resistance have a fleet of slow , vulnerable hoagy when Y - wing have existed for several decades ? Why does the First Order not utilise their massive fleet to but besiege the Resistance rather of tardily chasing them ? It ’s okay for a infinite fantasy to have some light-headed ideas , but it becomes perturb when it ’s a approach pattern .

Many character arcs also feel redundant or poorly executed , which is a shame since I was so indue with them inThe Force Awakens .

Nearly everything set up by the first movie feel like it was invalidate out , forcing the next film to develop a last - hour secret plan . Many character arcs also feel redundant or poorly executed , which is a shame since I was so endow with them inThe Force Awakens . I honestly have a hard metre seeingThe Last Jedias more than a ripoff ofThe Empire Strikes Back ’s plot social organization , but with familiarStar Warsmoments subverted for shock value .

Will I Come Back Around With The Last Jedi?

My Star Wars opinions have changed before

Of course , just because I dislikeThe Last Jedinow does n’t mean my opinion wo n’t alter at some point . I used to be caught up in the hate for theStar Warsprequel trilogy , but like other fans , I ’ve come to appreciate them more . There was also a time when I dislikedThe Force Awakens(probably around the fourth dimension I lovedThe Last Jedi),but now I can at least catch it as a really entertaining and dear film .

Then again , I was in my late teens and early 20 when the continuation trilogy was released , forever learning and grow as I entered adulthood . Now that I ’m sure-enough , perhaps myStar Warsopinions will be more consistent in the long term , but I like to think I ’m still clear to change my brain . MaybeStar Wars : The Last Jediwill make headway me back , but for now , it ’s no longer one of my go - toStar Warsmovies .
