Split Fiction
Split Fictionhonestly blew me away . I was excited going into this mitt - on trailer session , but my expectations were tempered by the sheer ambition of this game . Was this endure to be gimmicky or a novel standard of cooperative play ? It ’s no arcanum that co - op is a dying way of play in the diligence . It was once expected for a story - based game to have some form of carbon monoxide - op included , but that started to dwindle down in the preceding ten .
Then , we have Hazelight - the studio that madeA Way Outand Game of the Year winnerIt Takes Two- carrying the torch for Colorado - op in the world of gaming , having made a name for themselves with the aforementioned two titles . And now they ’re make on a brand - new plot that aims to remold those two previous releases almost as stepping stones , shove players into ostensibly dozens of ideas or story ( or level ) that ca n’t be look at anything but challenging . Again , my concern was Hazelight becoming Icarus here , but that does n’t seem to be the literal case .
The Story Of Split Fiction
As show in trailers so far , Split Fictionfollows two characters - author - name Mio and Zoe . The secret plan begin with both of them make it at Rader Publishing , looking to get a publication trade for one of their stories , but they could n’t be any unlike from each other . Mio is a sceptical , pessimistic , closed - off individual whose history are almost always concentre on science fabrication , whereas Zoe is a trusting , bubbly , open someone whose write up are almost always focused on phantasy - and they each dislike the other person ’s opt literary genre .
Split Fiction Continues Hazelight ’s Legacy Of Revolutionizing Co - op game
Once they go through an preference at Rader Publishing , the companionship ’s father , James Rader , appears and introduces all the prospective authors to a motorcar of his own aim that create a simulation for them to search . The simulation is something akin to The Matrix in which the participants are thrust into raw reality , sometimes with abilities or power . But the true purpose of the computer simulation is n’t for the authors to experience their stories first - hand but rather for Rader to steal their ideas , which is where things go haywire .
Mio seek to back out and escape , but is halt by Rader . During a scuffle , she accrue into Zoe ’s simulation , which is how we finish up with the taradiddle of … Split Fiction . A rather liable title considering their fictional stories have been quite literally split , and the only fashion for them to break out of the broken simulation and prevent their melodic theme from being stolen is to travel through " glitches , " which throw them from one story ( or degree ) to the next .
What I Played In Split Fiction
I Played 3 Hours Of Split Fiction, And As Zoe
My co - op partner and I startedSplit Fictionfrom the beginning , where we first get into Zoe ’s fantasy story , but the first actual military mission is one in which Mio and Zoe were cyber ninjas ( it was Mio ’s story ) . decent away , it became clear just how dissimilar each level would be . Over the course of action of three hour , we played through an estimated 10 levels ( admit two side missionary post ) , each one jumping between phantasy and sci - fi . And present the game is approximately 12 - 14 60 minutes long , that ’s a lot levels . Imagine the film Everything Everywhere All At Once in video recording game conformation , but even then that description feels slightly artful .
Split Fiction Has A Chance To Fix It Takes Two ’s Biggest Problem
Throughout the game , you will play as cyber ninjas - one person with a sword that allows them to walk on wall and ceiling and the other individual with a whip that can take appreciation of specific objects - as well as transform into a pinball with gravity abilities , a pig that can fly by farting , and someone who can shapeshift into a fairy and humanoid tree ( like an Ent , or a supersized Groot ) . In some cases , you ’ll have to shapeshift from the fairy to the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , and back , in a matter of seconds , which may take to align with what your cobalt - op partner is doing with their own shapeshifting .
You ’ll also control a flying dragon in the game - three times , I try - each time at a different leg of the flying lizard ’s growth . The dragon were young in the level we played ; one would wheel like Sonic ( albeit much , much slower ) and climb wall , while the other would spit Lucy in the sky with diamonds and aviate .
Interestingly , one of the last point we played through in our hand - on session was the toughened to solve . It ’s not that it was particularly difficult in any way ; we knew what we had to do , but we did n’t know that my pardner ’s dragon could fly . It necessitate him to be in the air before he could go flying , which meant he need to leap out off a ledge and potentially expire . We figured it out after a dyad minutes and felt idiotic afterward , but later on mark that other group got stuck at the same place .
Split Fiction Is Already One Of The Most Exciting Games Of 2025
Split Fictionis filled to the lip with puzzles and moments that require both player to be on - point , but it ’s not an overly difficult plot . It prioritizes merriment - and the friendly relationship that is being built between Mio and Zoe , not to mention the player play the secret plan . Because of this , while the game may jump from an action at law - heavy boss fight a la old God of War to a sidescroller that looks like it ’s been pulled from the eighties ( with modern graphics , of line ) , it does n’t feel jarring .
The gameplay is designed to make it easy to read . You have primary and secondary ability , and most of the time a wrestling for the sci - fi missions . Sometimes those ability allow you to shapeshift , give notice a weapon ( or a shield breakers ) , roll around , use a gravity whip , or one of dozens of other thing . Then you have the ability to jump , dash , and interact , which make up the core mechanics of the secret plan . There ’s not a whole lot here , which givesSplit Fictionan easy unveiling point .
Why I Enjoyed Split Fiction So Much
Split Fiction Is Easy To Get Into And Is Quite Unique
Hazelight has earned good will from sports fan ( and people like myself ) with their previous two titles , butSplit Fictionhas call so much more . I ca n’t say if the full secret plan will deliver on everything , but what I ’ve seen , heard , and played , I ’m affirmative . One of my biggest gripes with AAA games across the entire industry is repetition - not to mention overutilization of simple mechanics , therefore falling into gimmicky territory . I ’m not seeing either one here .
There ’s enough variety that the biz almost always feels fresh , even when you turn back to being a cyber ninja for the second or third time . Even beyond the gameplay , the phylogenesis of the news report is immersive , gratifying , and sometimes humorous . At one point , we were defend a giant orb villain above the urban center apparent horizon because of a awe of delinquent parking ticket . ( Split Fictiondoesn’t just take stories the two writer wrote down on paper but also pulls from the ideas they dream up throughout their life history . )
What we envision barely engrave the control surface , as Josef Fares said there are thing in this game that have never been done in gaming before . He was also quite worked up about the ending and for us ( and everyone ) to experience it , but he would n’t give any clue as to what the closing will entail .
I ’m not easily impressed with games that endeavor to usher in a new gimmick or fight boundaries that most people did n’t eff existed , simply because those titles tend to fall scant while also falling into classic bunker that via media caliber . ButSplit Fiction … this is a unlike animal . I can tell even with just three hours of secret plan time . Again , that ’s not to say the full game will deliver on all of its promises , but what I act showed me that Hazelight calculate for the stars - and did so with grace and sympathy of their limitations .
