Warning : Spoilers for NYX # 8!MostX - Menfans know what it ’s like to get attached to a particular mutant and watch them through highs and Low , but there are few feelings worse than watch out a beloved fibre get their name dragged through the mud . As a longtime Hellion devotee , I ’ve been fighting that battle withNYX . The latest issue finally ended my hurt and proved that I underestimated the creativeteam ’s understanding of Julian Keller .
NYX#8 by Jackson Lanzing , Collin Kelly , and Francesco Mortarino consecrate me the bit I ’ve been hoping for since the serial was announced . devil ’s journeyfrom a spoiled rich kid to a promising leader , devoted Quaker , and fantastically gifted revolutionary is one of the most compelling stories any immature mutant has received , yet he ’s pass the in force part of a tenner being sidelined .
Despite lack the character , Julian ’s take as the Magneto - esque scoundrel , the Krakoan , was an straightaway letdown for me . I felt his heartbreaking journey was undervalued , and I ’m delighted thatNYX#8confirmed what I ’ve known since his Academy X Day : heller has always been a superhero .
Hellion Reveals that the Krakoan Was Always a Sham, and I’m Thrilled
NYX#8 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Francesco Mortarino, Raúl Angulo, and Joe Sabino
In a encounter a longsighted time in the making , Laura Kinneystops the transport meant to take the Krakoan to Greymalkin Prison and question him about the six public murders he come out to put . What began as a rescue ( with strings attached ) turn into a heated , barbed yelling catch between the two of them . I ’ll admit , I’d almost written off the entire issue by the middle of their argument , only to receive myself celebrating once Laura finally develop the true statement out of him . There were no bodies and no murder , and Julian had only kept up appearances for Empath and the Cuckoos .
Despite being failed by the hug drug - work force in his hr of want , Hellion is still a Italian sandwich at his core and is uncoerced to be punished as a scoundrel to uphold that .
late down , Hellion has only ever tried to assist people . As Laura truly guide out , he did n’t just lose his hands - he give them to facilitate others . Julian nearly burned himself to end just to get X-23 back to Elixir in hopes of healing her . He regularly put himself between his friends and life - threatening danger or , at the very least , stood up for them in the face of oppression . Despite beingfailed by the X - Menin his hour of need , Hellion is still a sub at his centre and is willing to be punished as a baddie to save that .
Hellion Was One of the X-Men’s Most Prominent Young Heroes
He’s Been Denied the Chance to Shine
Since his first full appearance inNew Mutants#10 by Nunzio DeFillipis , Christina Weir , and Carlo Barberi , Julian Keller has been something of a polarizing figure of speech . He ’s always had a sharp tongue , which at time comes off as infantile bullying yet also serve well as an effective artillery against lip service and bigotry . heller has always been quick to defend his friends and is willing to press for what he believes in , even when others are quick to take a more passive approach . To me , he ’s always been something of a force play of nature : strong , unpredictable , and able to slue a path of destruction .
Those tone set him up as perfectleadership material for the X - humanity . His friends were incredibly patriotic and saw him as someone worth following , and his incredible telekinesis meant having the raw power to make a difference of opinion in conflict , too . psychic trauma upon harm throw him off path , from see the cosmos change after M - Day to lose his best ally in a Purifier attack and having his hands burned off by a Nimrod Sentinel . When his anger at everything he bear start up to get out of ascendence , he received little support , andI watched the X - Men completely squander one of their most gifted pupils .
NYX Is Finally Giving Hellion His Well-Earned Redemption
X-Men’s New Era Isn’t Forgetting the Franchise’s Most Underrated Mutant
Not only didNYXoffer the proof of Hellion ’s valiancy that I ’d been hoping for , but it served as the perfect monitor of all he endured . From the opening panels of him pleading for demise in hope of Krakoa ’s Resurrection Protocols rejuvenate his body to Laura Kinney ’s memories of his support while she learned how to be a real somebody , it was the walkway down memory lane that I experience was demand in this story . Everything I fear had been forgotten or , worse , twisted into fodder for Julian really being a Magneto copycat villain was or else offered to reader perhaps less familiar with Julian ’s journeying .
As the Krakoan need over Magneto ’s dream of mutant domination , his first defeat prove that he ’s more like the Master of Magnetism than he bed .
WithNYX#8 putting everything in the open , let in the truth behind his involvement with Empath , ten - Men is finally pose Hellion back on the right itinerary . He has the leadership ability , passion , and right-down power to be an unbelievable plus to the franchise , and his potential has been wasted as he sat on the bench for years . In short , I tip my hat to writer Lanzing and Kelly for not only unmake my disappointment , but giving this longtime Hellion fan everything I ’ve want since the moment the serial was declare . X - Menhas at last repair Hellion to the superhero status he merit .
